September, a time for the kids to go back to school, cool mornings with long summer nights, when we start thinking of winter and the holidays. But this September, this one is different. This year has been a year like no other, leaving many feeling disappointed, confused, angry. Our societal atmosphere is riddled with tension, violence, and fear. Add to that the political tension, which is often so thick it can be difficult to have conversations without someone becoming offended or hurt. So much of the news we hear is devastating, whether it be on TV, the radio, social media, and the like, leaving a bad taste in our mouths. Too many of us are struggling to find a way to juggle educating our children and working at home simultaneously, redefining life as we know it for the foreseeable future.
So before we get too far into pumpkin spice and yummy smelling candles, before we retreat into our homes to try and forget about the world with its problems, in an effort to make ourselves feel better, I wanted to post this piece called “Arise.” It is simply a realization that we are not without hope, and that our future is not over; that we have a loving God who is for us and not against us. Even though it looks like the darkness is swirling, surrounding us, we can trust in the knowledge that the light of God’s goodwill can bring peace, piercing through any darkness thrown at us, bringing us into His light and His peace, helping us to “Arise” out of it all, into His goodness.
“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and His glory appears over you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.” – Isaiah 60:1-2
